Takeaways as India win low-scoring ODI series against England

(Cricket news) India on Sunday defeated England by 5 wickets to win the series 2-1. This was India's first ODI series win away against England since 2014. All 3 matches were low scoring with the highest score being 261 by India in the 2nd innings of the 3rd ODI. The bowling on display by both the sides was absolutely incredible. Reece Topley and Jasprit Bumrah in particular were exceptional with the new ball. India will have quite a few positives to take away from this series and even this tour in general. India's whiteball teams look very solid at the moment and that is what the priority seems to be at the moment with the T20 World Cup this year and the ODI World Cup next year.

Hardik Pandya was named the Player of the Series for his all-round performance. He scored 100 runs in 2 innings and got 6 wickets. Pandya's performance in the series decider match in particular was impressive as he got his career best bowling figures of 4/18 and also scored a crucial 71 off 55 balls. The all-rounder is surely back to his best and he will be an extremely important player in the white ball format going forward. The IPL captaincy has unlocked a different level to Hardik Pandya's prowess as he is now more mature and takes more responsibility in the team. It is important that the management uses the player carefully so that he doesn't get injured again.

Rishabh Pant scored an incredible unbeaten 125 off 113 balls to lead India to victory. The Delhi boy continues to put in match winning performances in series deciders. He has already established himself in red ball cricket and now he is coming to life in the limited overs format. Pant has once again shown that he will be playing 3 formats consistently for a very long time. It seems as number 4 in white ball and number 5 in Tests is the perfect batting position for him. India's top order form is a bit of a concern as Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli failed to get going in the 2nd and 3rd match. Dhawan will have an opportunity to prove himself against the West Indies where he will also be captain. Kohli now has a long break from cricket after which India will be hoping that he will get back to his best.

Jasprit Bumrah in the first match and Mohammed Siraj in the third match bowled exceptionally well with the new ball. Mohammed Shami was also pretty solid while Prasidh Krishna also provided good support. Yuzvendra Chahal once again had a good tournament as he chipped in with crucial wickets in the middle overs. India's bowling unit is looking very solid with a lot of talent sitting on the bench. Now it is just all about finding the right combination with the opponent and conditions in mind which is a very welcome problem for Rahul Dravid.
