Stroll: Singapore F1 qualifying crash was caused by a weighbridge and filthy air

Lance Stroll has described how the FIA weighing his Aston Martin Formula 1 vehicle, combined with filthy air from an Alpine, resulted in his massive 2023 Singapore Grand Prix qualification shunt.

(Motorsports news) Stroll unbalanced his AMR23 by clipping the kerbs through the penultimate bend at Marina Bay. He then fired into an outer wall before returning to the circuit. In the closing minutes of Q1, a shunt took the tethered front-left wheel off, resulting in a lengthy red flag halt as the barriers were fixed and the track surface was cleaned.

A cautious assessment in the medical center revealed no injuries, and Stroll indicated that a busy Q1 had prepared the stage for his collision. He said that a combination of losing time due to the FIA weighing his car, traffic, foul air, and poor tyre preparation pushed Lance Stroll to ‘send it’ in order to make Q2. “We just weren’t really improving on that last lap with the out-lap being really bad,” the Canadian explained. I got a lot of traffic from guys attempting to get to the end of the queue.

“We got stopped at the weighbridge, so we were at the back of the line, and then I had to pass a bunch of cars to get my lap in before the session ended.” The wake produced by Pierre Gasly’s Alpine ahead, according to Stroll, was magnified by the nature of Singapore, given the proximity of the street track walls, to unsettle the car. “I started my lap two seconds behind one of the Alpines, which is really not ideal for aero performance,” he continued.

“I was just not improving my lap time enough to make it to Q2, so I sent it into the last corner and tried to make up some time.” It was simply not possible. “It happens quickly, but I understand why I crashed.” It was simply because I wasn’t moving quickly enough.

“Once I realized everything was fine, it was just shitty because we had a rough session, which has been going on for a while now. With bad out-laps, traffic, and poor tyre preparation, Quali just didn’t go our way at all.” When those items pile up around here, it’s a downward spiral. As a result, the crash occurred.”
