Siraj shines as India shoots out South Africa for 55 at their fortress Capetown

(Cricket news) Mohammed Siraj delivered a dream spell of fast bowling (6/15 in 9 overs) after being put into bowl, as South Africa were shot out for a mere total of 55 on the first morning of the 2nd Test at Cape Town, where India has never won a test match.

All the wickets for Siraj came in his opening nine-over burst where he made full use of the conditions to rattle the Proteas batting line-up.

None of the South African batters except Kyle Verreynne and David Bedingham managed to get to double figures for South Africa after their skipper Dean Elgar decided to bat first on a sunny morning at Capetown .The impact of Siraj’s mayhem was so significant, that Jasprit Bumrah, for a change, was reduced to a support act. Mukesh Kumar on the early days of his test career picked up a couple of wickets towards the end to boost his stats.

The procession of wickets started in the fourth over when Aiden Markram edged one to Jaiswal at slip who took a wonderful catch diving to his left. Soon after, Dean Elgar playing his last test chopped one onto the stumps to give India the perfect start to the new year after facing a rather embarrassing defeat in the first test.

Thereafter, wickets kept falling at regular intervals with the South African batters not being able to deal with the quality of fast bowling on offer by the Indians. Tony De Zorzi nicked one of his legs playing a false shot. David Bedingham got one from Siraj that corked off a good length whereas Tristan Stubbs on his debut did not trouble the scorers as he was dismissed by Bumrah for 3 runs. Marco Jansen’s wicket off a full outswinger got Siraj to the third least expensive five-wicket haul for India.

The 55 all out is South Africa’s lowest Test total since readmission. The surface is helping the fast bowlers and it will be difficult for the Indians to bat on but with such a low total, the visitors are on top at Capetwon.
