(Cricket News) Shreyas Iyer, who has been complaining of back stiffness, is likely to miss next week’s Rajkot Test due to India’s mounting injury woes in the ongoing five-Test series against England, according to MCA sources.

Sources state that the National Cricket Academy has written to the BCCI regarding his fitness status. Incidentally, the squad for the third Test and beyond has not yet been named, with a source confirming that the selectors have not yet been called to order. The selectors were supposed to meet on Thursday (February 8) but are now expected to do so today, with a formal announcement of the squad expected to follow.

Iyer has been plagued by back problems for the past 12 months. He was unable to start the Border-Gavaskar series last year, but the chronic condition worsened during the fourth Test in Ahmedabad, forcing him to consider surgery as a means of regaining fitness.

The lengthy rehabilitation process meant that he missed most of the cricket season, returning only in August in time for the Asia Cup. Despite missing as many as four first-choice players in Vizag—Mohammed Shami, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja—India managed to draw the series. The third Test is scheduled to begin in Rajkot on February 15.
