Shakib Al Hasan Secures Parliament Seat in Landmark Victory

(Cricket News) In the general elections held on Sunday, January 7, the captain of the Bangladesh cricket team, Shakib Al Hasan, gained a seat in parliament. Shakib ran for the Awami League and won handily in the general polls, which were boycotted by the opposition.

A representative for the election commission told the media that the Awami League can be declared the winner with the results that are currently available, but the final announcement will be made after the conclusion of the counting of votes in the remaining constituencies. Notably, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has also secured yet another term with the Awami League, winning 200 of the 300 seats in the Parliament.

Following the World Cup, Bangladesh played two tours of New Zealand, one at home and one away, but Shakib was not involved in any of the assignments. Shakib last appeared in the ODI World Cup 2023, where he guided his team to an eight-place finish.

Although the Bangla Tigers had another lacklustre tournament, the finish was sufficient to see the Asian nation secure a place in the Champions Trophy, while the likes of Sri Lanka and Netherlands missed out.
