As his contract with Rayo Vallecano expires this season, 33-year-old Sergi Guardiola is expected to depart. The forward, who hasn’t played much in the 2024–25 season, said goodbye with passion as he reflected on his time with the team and his strong ties to the community.
Guardiola only played 348 minutes in 16 league games during this historic season, and he only scored once against Villamuriel in the Copa del Rey. He still has a close relationship with Rayo and its people in spite of these low numbers.
“My second stint at Rayo is coming to an end. I came back with the intention of helping the team from day one, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to don this badge once more,” he stated in a sincere letter. Under coach Iraola, he scored eight goals in 32 games during his first tenure at Vallecas in 2021–2022.
Guardiola remarked, “It has been an unbelievable season. We demonstrated Vallecas’ abilities, and making it to Europe was a major accomplishment. More than anything, though, I will treasure the happiness we brought to the entire neighborhood. I want to express my gratitude to the supporters, club employees, coaching staff, and teammates for their unwavering support. Interestingly, he only made one start this season, against Real Sociedad, at home.
His heart still belongs to Rayo, even though the forward is going on. “I will follow Rayo wherever I go because I will always be one of you,” he said. On and off the field, Guardiola leaves a legacy of dedication, perseverance, and hard work.
