(Tennis news) Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina defeated Belgian player Elise Mertens 6-4 6-3 in the Miami Open to progress into the quarter-finals. The result meant that the Kazakh player has now won 11 matches and she has the opportunity to win the ‘Sunshine Double’ with victory in Miami, having already won the Indian Wells earlier this month. 

Rybakina will now take on Italy’s Martina Trevisan in the last eight who will compete in a first WTA 1000 quarter-final after overcoming Latvia’s former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-3 6-3. In other results, American world number three Jessica Pegula defeated Poland’s Magda Linette 6-1 7-5 and will now take on Russian Anastasia Potapova in the quarter-finals. Stefanos Tsitsipas reached the last 16 in the men’s category with a 6-3 4-6 6-4 victory over Chilean qualifier Cristian Garin. 

The Greek player received a bye in the first round before second-round opponent Richard Gasquet withdrew through injury. Tsitsipas will now take on Karen Khachanov in the next match after the Russian overcame Czech Jiri Lehecka 6-2 6-4. Argentinian tennis player Francisco Cerundolo stunned World Number 6 Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-2 7-5.
