Russell’s F1 Belgian GP was ruined by poor positioning behind Piastri

George Russell claims that a mistake he made when attempting to overtake Oscar Piastri's paralyzed McLaren on the opening lap of the race cost him the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix.

(Motorsports news) George Russell made a strong exit from seventh place, and as he down the hill from La Source, he attempted to pass Piastri, who was struggling and had damaged his car due to being wedged between Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari and the inside barrier. Russell followed Lando Norris as he moved to Piastri’s left, but when he came to a roadblock, he was forced to turn around.

Lance Stroll, Yuki Tsunoda, and Fernando Alonso all passed through Eau Rouge, but Alex Albon received a strong tow and was hauled by at the end of the straight. Russell started slowly with a single stop after falling to 11th place, finally climbing to sixth.

When questioned about his afternoon, he remarked, “It was just very unfortunate in the beginning.” “When Oscar Piastri failed, I moved to the left, kind of overestimated his ability to turn, got surrounded, and dropped four or five spots at the beginning. “In a way, my race was determined by that. Without that, we would have been in position five. I’d liked to think that I would have been there to compete for the podium alongside Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

“I believe one stop around here was a pretty competitive stint,” he continued. On the soft tyre, I felt incredibly strong during my last stint. Just an extremely difficult weekend overall. Happy it’s over. A little reset, then start over. When it started to rain and he was driving on worn-out tires, Russell acknowledged that his lengthy first stint wasn’t easy.

“I mean, when the rain started coming down, it was definitely tricky,” he remarked. “Once more, if we had known how much rain was expected, we would have pitted onto the soft, and that’s when you would have had the biggest difference in those difficult conditions,” the author continued.

Russell acknowledged that he believed McLaren would be quicker at Spa and Ferrari less so. ” McLaren weren’t as competitive as I thought they were going to be this race,” he stated. “I believe Charles may have surprised us. We probably didn’t expect them to move that quickly. “However, as I already mentioned, we’re doing well in the teams’ championship. Right now, everything appears to be quite secure. But this year, all of our attention is on racing.
