Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti were greatly relieved to learn that some of their players will be available for their forthcoming matchup with Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal. Antonio Rüdiger will be able to play in the first leg against the Gunners despite being under investigation for an incident following Real Madrid’s victory over Atletico Madrid on March 12. In addition to fining Rüdiger €40,000 and threatening to ban him from one game if he commits the same offense again within a year, the UEFA disciplinary committee has opted not to suspend him.
Superstar Kylian Mbappé will also face punishment, joining Rüdiger with a €30,000 fine. Vinicius Jr. has been cleared of any penalties, but Dani Ceballos has been given a €20,000 fine. Only 23 days have passed since the aforementioned game, and there are just four days left before they play Arsenal in the Champions League. Ancelotti will rely heavily on his key players in this crucial match, thus UEFA’s decision is a huge assist.
UEFA launched an inquiry against Rüdiger, Mbappé, Ceballos, and Vinicius’ actions following the game at Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on March 27, precisely fifteen days after the incident. The European regulatory body deemed their behavior during the festivities—interacting with fans as Atletico supporters were causing disruptions—to be “indecent behavior.” When Rüdiger rejoiced after converting the game-winning penalty kick, these actions were evaluated. Together with the traveling Madrid supporters, the players traveled to the north end of the Metropolitano to celebrate their progress in the competition. Unfortunately, the Atletico supporters’ throwing of objects ruined this celebration, which is why UEFA stepped in. Following a careful analysis, UEFA has decided not to sanction the players right now.
Now that Rüdiger and Mbappé may be used, it is crucial for Ancelotti to fully assemble the team in order to take on Arsenal in Europe. In order to produce a favorable outcome in the first leg of the quarterfinals, the team’s morale and the coach’s tactical adaptability are essential. Expectations are high as the game draws near that Real Madrid will be able to harness the momentum from their last triumph and use it to take on another formidable opponent in Arsenal.
