Bublik Reveals He Nearly Quit Tennis

After an outstanding grass-court effort against Dani Medvedev, Alexander Bublik just wrapped up another incredible week at the ATP 500 in Halle, winning the title for the second time in his career.

The Kazakh player, who is currently back in the top 30 globally, candidly reflected on his recent victory, admitting that he had really pondered quitting tennis for a period not too long ago.

“Anyone who’s followed my career knows that since Wimbledon last year, I was struggling with poor results,” Bublik said.  “I couldn’t comprehend why I was playing so poorly, and my rating drastically declined.  I was told by my coach to continue playing professionally until at least Wimbledon.  I considered giving up tennis for a few months if I didn’t make the top 100 or felt awful.

“It exceeded my hopes at that trying time to get to the Roland Garros quarterfinals and then triumph here in the halle.  “This feels like a real career rebirth,” he continued.

Bublik underlined how crucial it is to maintain perspective on the sport.  Even for players like me, we occasionally forget that this is only a game.  You can be more or less professional, but it’s important to keep in mind that tennis is a sport and a way for people to pass the time.  Even though it’s difficult and demands a lot of work, we must remember that it’s just a game.  It can be horrible at times, and lovely at others,” he clarified.

 Sensing the Pressure

Bublik admitted that the pressure still there despite his open thoughts about taking a break from tennis.  His latest triumphs signal a bright new era in which he strikes a balance between the demands of competitiveness and a renewed passion for the game.
