Ronaldo: Saudi Pro League > Ligue 1

Ronaldo attended the 2024 Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai on Friday night. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has been vocal about a variety of issues, from the “unfair” award to his assertion that he could turn around Manchester United’s fortunes if he were to take over the Red Devils. His most absurd assertion, nevertheless, was made when he discussed the Saudi Pro League’s quality and said that Ligue 1 was inferior to the Saudi top division.

Ronaldo stated during his speech at the Globe Soccer Awards: “Obviously, the Saudi Pro League is superior to Ligue 1. That’s not what I’m saying because I play here. What people think of it doesn’t matter to me. Players will see it fast if they come here. Try running at 38, 39, and 40 degrees, please.

“You’ll see when you come. Come if you don’t believe me. PSG is the only team left in France; all others have been eliminated. They have the best players and the most money, thus no one can beat them.”

Ronaldo has already criticized the caliber of Ligue 1, having done so in January when discussing his inability to guide Al-Nassr to the Saudi Pro League championship. He asserted that the SPL had more competitiveness than the French top flight, for example.

“To be honest, I don’t think the Saudi League is any worse than the French League,” he remarked. I believe there are two or three good clubs in [the] French league. I believe that competition has increased in Saudi Arabia.

“It’s just my viewpoint, and I played there once, so I know what I’m talking about. They can say whatever they want. However, we are currently superior than [the] French league, and we continue to get better.”

Ronaldo’s failure to lead Al-Nassr to the league title in his first two seasons may be the source of the allegations about the Saudi Pro League’s difficulty. Unfortunately, with Al-Ittihad and Al-Hilal dominating the standings, it appears doubtful that the Portugal skipper will be able to take home any hardware this season either.
