(Cricket News) India found themselves at 22/4 within four overs, but despite Rohit Sharma’s recent struggles with two successive ducks, there was little hesitation in his approach. Although the Indian captain could have easily fallen for a single-digit score or even a third consecutive zero, he rode his luck and showcased a remarkable turnaround as the innings progressed. Rohit’s fifth T20I century, the highest in the format, undoubtedly brought relief to both him and the selectors, dispelling any doubts about his spot for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup.

When the selectors reintroduced Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the series against Afghanistan, it was portrayed as a necessity due to the unavailability of players like Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya. However, there seemed to be a certain apprehension among the selectors about not including the two experienced veterans in the squad. Despite the promising performances of the youngsters since the last World Cup, the selectors opted for the seasoned duo, emphasizing the need for a fearless approach with the bat in the T20 format.

While Kohli succumbed early on, Rohit found himself in a favorable position with the presence of Rinku Singh, allowing him to rein in his aggressive instincts for a while. The run rate remained below six an over until the halfway mark, and once the Afghan bowlers completed their initial spells, Rohit capitalized on the less experienced second line of their attack.

Changing gears, Rohit reached his fifty in 41 balls and began to unleash his attacking prowess. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium’s small dimensions and fast outfield aided Rohit and Singh as they targeted a score of 200, showcasing India’s deliberate decision to set such aggressive targets regardless of the initial situation.

Rohit’s display of hitting ability was evident as he effortlessly found the boundary and sent the ball into the stands. The lack of experience in the Afghan bowling attack resulted in frequent no-balls and wides, with Rohit playing unconventional shots like the reverse-pull. Debutant seamer Mohammad Saleem faced the brunt of Rohit’s aggression, conceding 43 runs in three overs.

Sharma’s second fifty came in just 23 balls, solidifying his dominant performance. He later continued his impressive form in the Super Overs. This stellar display secured his place for the upcoming tours to the United States and the Caribbean. However, questions remain about the impact of his inclusion and whose spot he might take, as India aims to end its prolonged ICC trophy drought.
