Robert Lewandowski’s brace helps Bayern Munich retain the German Super Cup

(Football news) Bayern Munich successfully retained the German Super Cup against rivals Borussia Dortmund with a 3-1 victory at Signal Iduna Park. Lewandowski powered his side ahead with a bullet header before Thomas Müller doubled the lead just after the first half. Despite Borussia Dortmund’s captain Marco Reus getting a goal back with a magnificent curled effort, Lewandowski’s second goal effectively sealed the result.

Lewandowski has now scored 24 goals in the same number of games against his former club where the Polish international played from 2010 to 2014. The result also means Bayern have now won six games on the trot against their rivals and Julian Nagelsmann will breathe a sigh of relief, as his team were without a win in four season friendlies as well as last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Both teams were wearing black armbands in tribute to the legendary striker Gerd Muller who played for Germany and Bayern Munich and passed away at the age of 75. However, this did not dampen the proceedings as the fans were eager to make themselves heard in a clash between two of Germany’s heavyweights. Both Youssoufa Moukoko and Erling Haaland found the back of the net but the goals were ruled offside for Dortmund’s young stars, as Bayern Munich went on to lift their first title of the new season.
