Real Madrid's decision to not make any January signings may need to change after the 2-1 loss to Villarreal

Real Madrid have had a terrible start to 2023

(Football news) Real Madrid had started the year with a nervy and lackluster 1-0 win against 4th division side Cacereno. Los Blancos then traveled to Villarreal where they lost 2-1 after another disappointing performance. Real Madrid didn’t create enough chances and the hosts were a constant threat to them. The loss was followed by Barcelona’s win away at Atletico Madrid which put the Blaugrana 3 points ahead of Real Madrid on top of the table. Real Madrid have hit poor form at the wrong time as their next fixture is the Spanish Super Cup semi final against Valencia.

Carlo Ancelotti had to play Eder Militao at right back because Dani Carvajal was injured and Lucas Vazquez was tired after playing 90 minutes midweek. Militao did play right back at the World Cup but Real Madrid’s style of play is completely different where the right back has to play a big part in the attack. The reason that can’t be changed is because the Merengues don’t have a natural right winger and their left back Ferland Mendy is very weak defensively. Despite all these problems Carlo Ancelotti has constantly said that they will not sign anyone in January. Right back, right wing, left back and back up striker are 3 positions Real Madrid could use some fresh faces in.

Real Madrid have never been big spenders in January but they might regret it at the end of the season. The perception around the Merengues always spending money on players is not accurate. Los Blancos in the past have delayed signings which have cost them big time. The most well known one was in 2018 when Madrid sold Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus and didn’t sign any sort of replacement for him. Florentino Pérez may have to move fast as Real Madrid have a lot of fixtures coming up in double quick time.
