Real Madrid women qualify for knockouts in debut WCL season

(Football news) Real Madrid women secured their place in the Women's Champions League quarter finals with a dominant 3-0 win over Breidablik UBK. A brace from Kosovare Asllani and a late goal from Claudia Zornoza was enough to get Real Madrid through to the knockouts.

This is Real Madrid women's 2nd official season. In their first ever season they finished 2nd and qualified for the WCL. Las Blancas came up against the experienced Manchester City in the qualifying round and caused an upset by winning. They were 1-0 down at the home leg before Kenti Robles equalized in the last minute. In the return leg they fought incredibly to win 1-0 and qualify for the group stages.

They were pitted in a group against reigning French Champions PSG, Zhytlobud-1 Kharkiv and Breidablik UBK. They lost both games against PSG but won the other 3 to qualify with a game to spare. Star striker Kosovare Asllani has been injured for the majority of the season so far. The Swede is just about back to full fitness and if she manages to stay fit Real Madrid could go far in this competition.

Their league campaign doesn't resonate with the European one. Real Madrid are currently 9th on the league table, 19 points behind table toppers FC Barcelona. They sacked their coach David Aznar a few weeks ago and appointed former Real Madrid player and Castilla manager Alberto Toril. Their next game is the big El Clasico against FC Barcelona where Real Madrid will be heavy underdogs. They have a WCL game against Zhytlobud-1 Kharkiv before the quarter finals draw on 20 December.
