(Football news) Drawn together for the Copa del Rey’s upcoming round, the Super Cup match is the first of three Madrid derbies that will occur in the upcoming month. After winning their past five competitive games, including a 3-1 victory against fourth-tier Arandina on Saturday, Real Madrid will be heading to Saudi Arabia with a confident attitude.
Joselu, Brahim Diaz, and Rodrygo scored goals to help a much-changed Real Madrid team continue their Copa del Rey crown defence in a match in which Arda Guler made his eagerly anticipated debut.
The Spanish Super Cup, which they have won twice since the four-team format was implemented in the 2019–20 season, will now be the focus of Carlo Ancelotti’s club, who is still chasing four titles.
After defeating Valencia on penalties in the semifinals, Los Blancos had won the Super Cup 12 times overall. However, they were unable to increase that total last season as they lost to their rivals in the Clasico 3-1.
Real Madrid will have to navigate a challenging match against their city neighbors in the first Super Cup meeting between the two since Los Blancos won a penalty shootout to secure the silverware in 2020 before they can prepare for a potential final against Barcelona or Osasuna.
Real Madrid responded forcefully after their 3-1 loss to Atletico in their most recent meeting in September, going on a 19-game unbeaten streak in all competitions that includes 16 wins and 3 ties.
Unlike their city neighbors, Atleti has only won the Super Cup twice: once in 1984 and again in 2014 after defeating Real Madrid, which was coached by Carlo Ancelotti, 2-1 over the course of two legs.
But unlike Los Blancos, Atletico has had trouble staying consistent lately; in their last five competitive games, they have won two, drawn one, and lost two.
