(Football news) Real Madrid have said that UEFA’s plan to refund some supporters for the debacle in the 2022 Champions League final is “insufficient” after an independent report said that the governing body bears “primary responsibility” for chaotic scenes that “almost led to disaster” outside the Stade de France. The Los Blancos have said that they will not work alongside UEFA on their “limited” repayment scheme and have asked them to “rectify and assume full responsibility”.

UEFA had previously said that the compensation scheme was “fair and accurately reflects the relative problems faced by fans on the night” and announced on Tuesday that it will refund some fans who faced issues in the final. The match was delayed by 36 minutes and many Liverpool fans were tear gassed and pepper sprayed. According to the independent report commissioned by UEFA, it said that it was “remarkable no one lost their life”. UEFA have said that the refund scheme covers all of the Liverpool ticket allocation – just over 19,000 fans as well as other supporters who may have been affected.

Real Madrid released a statement of their own that said “All the fans experienced an unacceptable delay in the start of the match. In addition, there was unacceptable insecurity both in accessing and leaving the stadium, as well as additional harm such as theft, assaults and threats. Unfortunately we consider the Uefa proposal insufficient. The content of the report, which was requested by Uefa itself, highlights that all the fans who attended the final were victims of Uefa’s poor organisation and saw their personal safety compromised.

“Whether being able to access the stadium or not, or having done so at the scheduled time, which in any case was due to the exceptional behaviour of the fans of the two clubs, the reality is that all the fans suffered. For this reason, Real Madrid has decided not to cooperate with the limited compensation scheme promoted by Uefa, which we ask to rectify and assume full responsibility.”

Uefa plans to give refunds to those fans who:

1) had tickets for gates A, B, C, X, Y and Z at the Stade de France – the area where many Liverpool supporters were bottle-necked and faced overcrowding issues

2) who did not enter the stadium before the match was supposed to kick-off (21:00 local time), according to the stadium’s access control data

3) who were not able to enter the stadium at all

4) who purchased accessibility tickets.
