(Football news) At the end of the current season, Luka Modric’s contract is set to expire, leaving him without a guaranteed future at the Santiago Bernabeu. In 518 games in all competitions, Modric has recorded 39 goals and 83 assists while winning a total of 23 trophies throughout his 12 glorious years with Los Blancos.
Although he has only started 16 of his 30 games, including just 11 La Liga starts, the five-time Champions League winner has struggled to play regularly for the first squad this season. Last week, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti admitted that Modric’s contract situation is “complicated” and that the Croatian will finally decide on his future.
Inter’s financial situation could work in the favour of Real Madrid, who are expected to have significant funds available for summer reinforcements.
However, it is also claimed that Inter are not prepared to part ways with Barella easily, despite their financial predicament, and would demand a figure in the region of €60m (£51.3m) for the midfielder.
In addition, it remains to be seen whether Barella would be interested in leaving Inter, as multiple reports have recently stated that the 27-year-old is close to extending his contract at San Siro until 2029.
After spending the last three and a half years with Inter, Barella has emerged as a star player for both club and nation. It is rumored that Premier League and La Liga teams are monitoring his growth.
In fact, Barella was reportedly targeted by Newcastle United last summer before they decided to acquire Sandro Tonali from rival AC Milan. Other teams that are said to have shown interest in Inter’s No. 23 include Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea.
The 51-cap Italy international has played 223 games for Inter in all competitions, tallying 22 goals and supplying 49 assists, including five assists and two goals in the first 36 games of this current campaign.
Barella has six championships under his belt at the Nerazzurri, having been a member of the team that advanced to the Champions League final the previous season. With Simone Inzaghi’s team now leading Serie A by 15 points, Barella hopes to win at least one more this season.
