(Football news) According to various reliable reports, Real Madrid have reached an agreement with Getafe for Borja Mayoral. Getafe will pay €10m to Los Blancos and Mayoral will sign a deal till 2027. The striker couldn't travel to the USA with the team before due to visa and vaccination issues but has now joined the squad. He will now have to return in order to complete the final details of his transfer. Real Madrid could have a sell on or a buy back clause for the Spaniard to have some sort of control over his future. Mayoral has only one year left on his current Real Madrid contract, therefore getting €10m for him will be an incredible deal for Los Blancos.
Why Real Madrid want to sell Mayoral is a different angle altogether. In their first pre-season game in which Karim Benzema was unavailable, Real Madrid failed to have a single shot on target. This happened a lot of times last season when the club couldn't cope with games in Benzema's absence. Mayoral is pretty similar to Benzema in terms of his qualities because his link-up play is pretty good. Mayoral would've been a good back up Benzema but Real Madrid have decided otherwise. Carlo Ancelotti may have been the one who didn't want to keep the player. The other reason could be that Real Madrid don't want to risk losing him for free next season. It would be very difficult to convince Mayoral to sign a new deal if he doesn't get enough game time.
The major reason is that Real Madrid have a back-up striker in Mariano. The harsh reality is that Mariano isn't good enough to play for Real Madrid but because of his salary demands and his willingness to stay at Real Madrid even if he doesn't get gametime means Madrid can't get rid of him. Therefore Real Madrid have to sell one back-up striker to not waste space and money. If Mariano had clubs who were willing to match his demands or if the player lowered his demands then Real Madrid may have kept Mayoral and sold Mariano instead. Real Madrid also have highly rated Castilla striker Jaunmi Latasa who could break into the first team this season.
