RCB lifts their first-ever T20 title, wins the WPL

(Cricket News) The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Women scripted history, winning the 2nd edition of the WPL. With the win, the women gave RCB their first-ever T20 title in the franchise’s history. They defeated the Delhi Capitals by 8 wickets in the finals on the back of some masterful spin bowling at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Winning the toss, the hosts Delhi Capitals opted to bat in a high-pressure game. They got off to great start with their openers Lanning and Shafali stitching a 64-run stand in just 7 overs, but what followed was nothing short of bad dream for the Capitals.

Molineux dismissed Shafali on the first ball of the 8th over and it opened the floodgates for the hosts. She further took 2 more wickets in the very same over, to make it a 3-wicket over and completely turn the game on its head. The Capitals suffered a sensational collapse and lost all their 10 wickets managing to add just 49 more runs.

Just as they had managed to choke Mumbai Indians in the eliminator, RCB’s spin attack was top class on the day of the final as well. Delhi managed 113 runs in their quota of overs, which never seemed enough. Shreyanka Patil ran through the lower order, ending with exceptional figures of 4-12 in her 3.3 over spell, also grabbing the purple cap.

Chasing a small total, RCB never fell behind in the game, however it wasn’t as simple as it looked. There were not too many hiccups as the top order stood up with the bat, but when Mandhana was dismissed with 32 still needed in 36 balls, DC sensed an opening. They managed to drag the game until the final over where five was needed, but Richa Ghosh along with Ellyse Perry kept their calm as Richa scored the winning runs.

Molineux was awarded with the Player of the Match award for her exceptional spell, while Shreyanka Patil grabbed the Emerging player of the season alongside the Purple Cap. Ellyse Perry got the Orange cap, for scoring the most runs. This was the first time in the history of IPL and WPL, that both the Orange and purple cap winners were from the team that lifted the title.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 113 in 18.3 overs (Shafali Varma 44; Shreyanka Patil 4-12, Sophie Molineux 3-20) lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore 115/2 in 19.3 overs (Ellyse Perry 35*, Sophie Devine 32; Shikha Pandey 1-11) by 8 wickets
