(Football news) Marcus Rashford is set to miss England’s Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine after picking up an injury in Manchester United’s FA Cup quarter final win over Fulham as the English Football Association made an official announcement on Monday. Rashford, who scored three goals at the World Cup last year, has been in scintillating form this season with more than 40 goals contribution for club and country.

Meanwhile, Fraser Forster has also been called up for injured Nick Pope. Forster, who subsequently made his debut in 2013 and has six England caps but he has not played since 2016. England are now going to play Italy in their first Euro 2024 qualifier in Naples before hosting Ukraine at Wembley on Sunday. Rashford since the World Cup has been playing regularly and is in real need of a rest. He has played 49 games for club and country now this season. If United reach the Europa League and FA Cup final then they could reach almost 72 matches this season if he continues to play every match. Rashford has lost a little spark in recent weeks despite scoring a goal against Real Betis five days ago. This season he has scored a staggering 27 goals for Manchester United, however, he has scored only two in his last six games.

Manchester United after the international break have nine fixtures across three competitions in the month of April, and with very limited attacking options, keeping Rashford fresh is United’s number one priority. This withdrawal is also a little dig towards England boss Gareth Southgate, who selected Rashford for only five minutes for the World Cup quarter-final defeat to France, despite the player being the top goalscorer at the tournament.

An FA statement released on Monday said: “Marcus Rashford will also miss out on the forthcoming UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers having picked up a knock during Manchester United’s Emirates FA Cup quarterfinal win over Fulham on Sunday.

“Similarly, Mason Mount will not report for international duty this week as he continues rehabilitation with Chelsea.”
