Rafael Nadal dispelled any concerns about rustiness in his comeback match following a year-long injury layoff. He secured a routine victory over 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph in the first round of the Brisbane International on Tuesday.

Nadal, playing his first singles match since a hip flexor injury at last year’s Australian Open, showcased sharp form right from the start. His dominant play from the baseline, powerful forehand, accurate serve (winning 90 percent on the first serve), and agile movement marked an impressive return to competitive tennis. Nadal expressed the emotional significance of the day, stating, “Today is honestly an emotional and important day for me after probably one of the toughest years of my tennis career.”

In his post-match comments, Nadal emphasized the importance of staying healthy and regaining confidence and movement after surgery. Despite acknowledging the challenge of returning to a high level of professional tennis, he expressed pride in his positive performance and thanked his team and family for their support.

Facing a valiant opponent in Thiem, Nadal encountered glimpses of high-quality tennis reminiscent of their past encounters, especially during the intense first set. Thiem’s powerful baseline play tested Nadal, but the Spaniard found his breakthrough to secure the set. Nadal continued his dominance into the second set, breaking Thiem’s serve early and maintaining control.

Reflecting on his comeback, Rafael highlighted the need for court time and professional match experience. He expressed happiness about the opportunity to play again and acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his return after an extended period away from competitive action.

While Rafael has successfully made injury comebacks in the past, this marks the first time he has returned to his best after a prolonged absence. The solid performance and win serve as a positive sign for his aspirations at the upcoming Australian Open, where he faces tough competition from Major contenders like Novak Djokovic and rising star Carlos Alcaraz. Nadal’s next match in Brisbane is against home favorite Jason Kubler.
