(Football news) Ousmane Dembele of FC Barcelona has decided to join Paris Saint-Germain. On July 6, transfer market specialist Aouna was among the first to suggest that Dembele had become a priority signing for the Qatari-owned Ligue 1 giants.
The 26-year-old was Ousmane Dembele, who was just a step away from switching allegiances, and Sunday news from multiple sources surfaced detailing how Barcelona had become “pessimistic” that their €105 million ($115 million) signing, who was ironically purchased with the money the Catalans received from PSG for Neymar, would stay with them.
Later that night, L’Equipe stated that Dembele’s camp had opted to quit Barcelona after learning that the Blaugrana had offered Dembele and Gavi to PSG as part of a possible swap deal for Kylian Mbappe.
According to L’Equipe, Dembele’s transfer is “imminent,” with only personal terms with the winger standing in the way of a deal being completed.
According to Aouna, Dembele has now checked this box by agreeing to stay with PSG until 2028. Helena Condis of COPE has revealed that the World Cup winner has already informed some of his soon-to-be former Barcelona colleagues that he will be leaving the club.
On Monday, the player’s incredibly low €50 million ($55 million) release clause will be activated, completing the transfer. Dembele must leave Barcelona’s preseason tour of the United States immediately to deposit the funds with La Liga.
Another perplexing aspect of the new terms agreed upon by Barcelona and Dembele in 2022 when renewing his contract until 2024 and establishing the release clause is that the player and his agent Moussa Sissoko can pocket half of the money. Gerard Romero responded to the news by revealing that Sissoko apparently called the Spanish league to inform them that PSG will trigger the release clause.
If this is not completed by midnight, the amount will be doubled to €100 million ($110 million). Losing Dembele in this fashion, and for only €25 million ($27.5 million), is a significant smack in the face for Barcelona.
President Joan Laporta would purportedly declare “war” on PSG and request that they be investigated for Financial Fair Play violations. Seven years after the Qataris kidnapped Neymar in a similar manner, they have returned to sting Barcelona and rob them of one of their players, albeit for nearly ten times less than the €222 million ($224 million) that it cost to get the Brazilian out of his contract at Camp Nou.
