Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to retain Manchester United job despite 5-0 humiliation against Liverpool

(Football news) Manchester United faced utter humiliation against arch rivals Liverpool as the visitors smashed the hosts 5-0 at Old Trafford. The scoreline could have been a lot worse if Liverpool hadn’t taken their foot off the pedal after the fifth goal and Solskjaer’s men looked thoroughly outclassed in every single aspect of the game. The match going fans at Old Trafford have been staunch supporters of the Norwegian and when Ole’s at the wheel was being sung at the stands, it came from the visitors end as Liverpool fans gleefully celebrated a historic victory in a fixture that has always yielded few goals.

As Solskjaer walked towards the dugout at the end of the match, the jeers were noticeably audible at Old Trafford and it seemed like the Manchester United fans had finally lost patience with the former Molde manager. However, it seems that the United hierarchy are prepared to stick with Solskjaer for the foreseeable future with the immediate focus on improving the league form after getting only one point from four matches.

The fixtures are far from easy with Manchester United set to face Tottenham this weekend before hosting their neighbours Manchester City at Old Trafford. The results are not just down to Solskjaer but it’s the manager who will be in the firing line if the current trend continues. After the match against Liverpool, Solskjaer said “We've come too far as a group and we're too close to give up now, I've heard nothing else [about a potential departure]. This is the lowest I've been, but as I've said, I accept the responsibility.

"I do believe in myself, I do believe that I am getting close to what I want with the club, I think what we've done, what I've seen, the development, of course, the results lately haven't been good enough. But I've got to keep strong and I do believe in what we've been doing, the coaching staff and the players."

Manchester United are currently seventh in the Premier League after nine games, eight points behind league leaders Chelsea.
