(Football news) Nottingham Forest have had a busy winter transfer window as they finalised the signing of the Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Keylor Navas in the final hour of the transfer window to subsequently complete a triple swoop on deadline day. Forest signed Atlético Madrid defender Felipe and Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelve while Navas, who is a three-time Champions League winner at Real Madrid, signed on loan for the rest of the season.
The Former Champions League winner has signed a loan deal for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign. Navas recently turned 36 as he tends to bring a wealth of international and domestic experience to the club, having more than made 564 appearances in a trophy-laden career. The Costa Rican international has also played 110 times for his country since making his debut against Suriname in October 2008. He has also gone onto feature in three consecutive FIFA World Cups including in Qatar last year.
Before making his big move to Real Madrid, Navas made a combined of 184 appearances during his spells with Deportivo Saprissa, Albacete and Levante. Later on in his career he signed for European giants Real Madrid in the summer of 2014. The goalkeeper was an instant success as he went on to win 12 major trophies with the Spanish club, including three UEFA Champions League titles and one La Liga title. He was named the UEFA Champions League Goalkeeper of the Season and was also named in the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season as Real won their 13th title in 2017/18 when they defeated Liverpool 3-1 in the final.
After making 162 appearances at the Bernabeu, Navas made another big move to Paris Saint-Germain in September 2019. The goalkeeper helped his club win two Ligue 1 titles and back-to-back Coupe de France with PSG. He was also named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year as well as named Goalkeeper of the Year in 2020/21. Having spent four years in Paris, Navas decided to move to England for the first time in his distinguished career and became the Club’s latest signing of the January transfer window.
“Navas, 36, brings a wealth of international and domestic experience to the club, having made 564 appearances in a trophy-laden career,” Forest said on their website, welcoming the Costa Rica international.
Jonjo Shelvey said: “It’s a pleasure to be here. As soon as I found out Forest were interested, it caught my eye straight away and I just couldn’t wait to get down here. It’s a fantastic football club that has so much history and I’m really looking forward to getting started.
“My main goal straight away is to fight for my place in the team and stay there. It’s not going to be easy because there’s a lot of competition for places, but it’s a challenge I’m really looking forward to and the competitiveness can only help the team going forward.
“I spoke to Eddie Howe and he had such good words to say about Steve Cooper. I previously knew of him from my time at Liverpool, so I knew what a fantastic coach he was, but meeting him for the first time has been a breath of fresh air.
“He’s told me what he expects and the high standards he sets, so I can hope I can come and help the team push to stay in the Premier League. I’ve been in this league a long time, I know what it takes to stay up and what it takes to get a good team to gel, so I’m looking forward to getting started and working with the players that are here.”
