(Football news) Miguel Almiron scored for Newcastle in the Champions League for the first time since Alan Shearer did so against Inter Milan in March 2003 as he pounced on a rebound to give the Magpies team the perfect start.

The Premier League team increased their lead with the momentum working in their favour in the 39th minute thanks to a header from Dan Burn. Within five minutes of the restart, Lucas Hernandez scored to give PSG hope. Then, within five minutes after that, Sean Longstaff added a third goal.

But PSG was unable to mount a comeback as Fabian Schar completed a historic evening with an unstoppable stoppage-time goal to secure the victory.

PSG drops to second position after suffering their second defeat in a competitive match this year, while Newcastle rose to the top of Group F.  Ousmane Dembele missed with his attempt after Kylian Mbappe’s inch-perfect pass in the fifth minute, serving as a warning to the Magpies.

The only opportunity for the visitors in the opening frame was a brief scare, but the home team immediately reaffirmed its dominance to go ahead in the 17th.

After Marquinhos gave up possession, Gianluigi Donnarumma made a good save to deny Alexander Isak, but the PSG goalie was powerless to stop Almiron from converting the rebound for his third goal in four games.

As Newcastle continued to advance, Schar missed a chance to increase their lead when he misfired on a corner kick from Kieran Trippier.

A second goal, scored in the final seconds of the first period, was ultimately the result of the Magpies’ perseverance and tenacity.

Following two excellent stops by Donnarumma in quick succession, Burn managed to get his header from Bruno Guimaraes’ lofted cross over the goal line.

Longstaff’s effort went past Donnarumma’s right arm in the 50th minute, giving the home crowd another goal from one of their own after one of their own, a boyhood Newcastle supporter, had scored before halftime.

Shortly after Longstaff scored his first Champions League goal, PSG responded with a goal through Hernandez, who made a wonderful header off of a floating pass from Warren Zaire-Emery.
