Newcastle United are set to sign Liverpool flop Loris Karius on a free transfer

(Football news) Newcastle are in advanced talks to sign former Liverpool number 1 goalkeeper Loris Karius following a serious injury to Karl Darlow in training on Wednesday. Karius is a free agent after his Liverpool contract ended in the summer as he hasn’t played for Liverpool since Alisson arrived in 2018, he spent the last two years on loan at Besiktas and Union Berlin. The 29-year-old is already in Newcastle to undergo a medical and sign a short-term deal to complete a move to St James' Park.

Newcastle were forced to act after Darlow tore his ankle ligaments in a training session on Wednesday. The 31-year-old keeper now faces some time on the sidelines, leaving Newcastle short of a goalkeeper in the squad. Newcastle are unable to recall Martin Dubravka until January under the terms of his Deadline Day loan move to Manchester United, so Eddie Howe was forced to look for a cover for summer signing Nick Pope. Karius joined Liverpool from Mainz in 2016 but he quickly fell down the pecking order at Anfield when Alisson was signed as the club's No 1 goalkeeper just two years later.

The German struggled to make his mark at Liverpool and he is famously remembered for his poor showing in their 2018 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid which effectively cost his career at the club as loan moves to Turkey and Germany followed for the German keeper. Newcastle meanwhile, have goalkeeper Mark Gillespie in their ranks, although the 30-year-old has only made three appearances ever for the Magpies and he has no prior experience of playing in the Premier League. Nick Pope has firmly established himself as the club’s No.1 keeper after joining from Burnley this summer but they second goalkeeper after selling Martin Dubravka. Manchester United signed Dubravka on a loan deal with a £5m option to buy.
