NBA: Spurs win the sweepstakes for Victor Wembanyama after getting the no 1 draft pick

Spurs get the no 1 draft pick for the third time in their history as they have a chance to pick Victor Wembanyama

(Football news) In one of the most anticipated draft lotteries in NBA history, the San Antonio Spurs won the grand prize. They received the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft Lottery, which means that it gives them the golden opportunity to select Victor Wembanyama. The French phenom has been the talk of town ever since he announced himself for the NBA draft for months.

The French superstar stands at a whooping 7ft 5 inches tall and at the age 19-year-old possesses an unprecedented blend of size and skill that had all the leading NBA scouts drooling. He is surely going to be the No. 1 pick as Wembanyama is probably already planning his move to the Lone Star State. The Hornets suffered heartbreak after falling a single pick short of the top spot but still managed to pick the second overall, followed by the Trail Blazers at No. 3 and the Rockets at No. 4.

The biggest losers were the Pistons, who had the worst record in the NBA and fell all the way to the No. 5 spot. It was the worst possible outcome for them entering the night as they missed out on the sweepstakes for Wembayama. The No 2 prospect in Scoot Henderson in any other draft would have been the number 1 pick but the explosive point guard might fall to two or three in the draft. The Hornets have a big question to answer whether to draft Brandon Miller of Alabama State University or take an explosive point guard in Scoot Henderson, when they already have Lamelo Ball.

Wembanyama is touted as the next best prospect coming in the draft after Lebron James as the lanky Frenchman will join a list of nine current players in the NBA when he enters the league, which include the likes Rudy Gobert of the Timberwolves, Nic Batum of the Clippers and Killian Hayes of the Pistons. In a little over a month, Wembanyama from Paris will inevitably become the latest French prospect to put on a Spurs jersey and follow the footsteps of his idol in Tony Parker as he certainly has big shoes to fill.

NBA Mock Draft:
No 1 pick – Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs
No 2 pick – Brandon Miller, Charlotte Hornets
No 3 pick – Scoot Henderson, Portland Trail Blazers
No 4 pick – Amen Thompson, Houston Rockets
No 5 pick – Cam Whitemore, Detroit Pistons
