Chennai Super Kings cruised to a dominating 45 run victory against Rajasthan Royals courtesy of Moeen Ali's brilliant all-round performance at the Wankhede stadium on Monday. CSK clinched their second consecutive win to climb to the second position on the points table behind RCB.
It was Ali's day at the field as after scoring a significant 26 off 20 while batting, the all rounder produced a magical spell that sliced through the RR batting line up. His match winning spell featured 3 wickets while conceding only 7 runs in three overs. Ali first dismissed the danger man David Miller in his first over and then went on to claim other crucial wickets of Riyan Parag (3) and Chris Morris (0) to turn the tides in Chennai's favour.
Chasing a highly competitive target of 189, Royals were off to a good start with a 30-run partnership shared by openers Jos Buttler (49) and Manan Vohra (13). Buttler kept the scoreboard moving but failed to get support from the other end. Captain Sanju Samson (1) got out cheaply and Shivam Dube added 17 runs.
Ravindra Jadeja sent the in-form Jos Buttler and Shivam Dube back to the pavilion in the same over and shifted the momentum to CSK's side. After Jadeja, Moeen Ali also chipped in to further wreck the RR batters with his three-wicket haul. The duo pulled back the yellow brigade back in the game, leaving no chance for the Royals to stay in the contest.
After disappointing shows from Samson, Parag and Morris, Rahul Tewatia and Jaydev Unadkat tried to put up a fight with their 20 off 15 and 24 off 17 respectively but that did not suffice to take the Royals home. With 4 catches in the game, Jadeja was yet again electrifying on the field that in turn played a significant role in CSK's dominating victory.
RR captain Samson had won the toss and asked CSK to bat first. However, it was a good toss to lose for the yellow brigade as they put up a challenging total thanks to decent contribution from most of the batters.
Ruturaj Gaikwad failed once again but Faf du Plessis 33 off 17 ensured a flying start for CSK. Moeen (26), Ambati Rayudu (27), and Dwayne Bravo's quick fire 20 off 8 balls powered Dhoni & Co. to 188 that the CSK bowlers conveniently defended.
