Mbappe scores late winner as Paris Saint-Germain extend lead to nine points at Ligue 1 summit

(Football news) With Lionel Messi and Neymar on international duty, Kylian Mbappe stepped up to end his four game scoreless streak with an 87th minute penalty against Angers. With this result, PSG are on 27 points from 10 games and have firmly cemented themselves on top of Ligue 1.

PSG struggled in the absence of some of their superstars on international duty and Angers took the lead in the 36th minute through Angelo Fulgini who flicked the ball into the back of the net from Sofiane Boufal's cross. Abdou Diallo made his first appearance in over a year after a serious knee injury when the 25 year old came on for Juan Bernat in the 63rd minute.

PSG’s lacklustre display continued until Ander Herrera found Kylian Mbappe in the 69th minute and the Frenchman sent a fine cross to Danilo Pereira who levelled the scoring with a firm header. Just when it seemed like the match would end in a draw, it appeared that Pierrick Capelle handled the ball from Mauro Icardi's header. After a VAR check, the penalty was awarded and Mbappe coolly converted his fifth goal of the season.

Angers defender Romain Thomas was furious at the VAR decision and said in the post match interview “I'm sick and tired of the VAR. Millions were invested in it and they don't know how to use it. I was fouled by Icardi and he took advantage of his foul to be in front of goal.” Meanwhile, PSG defender Colin Dagba gave credit to his team's resilience and Mbappe for all three points by saying “We never gave up, it was important to win today, Kylian really played a key role tonight."
