Chelsea have finally announced the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino who has a big task ahead of him

(Football news) Mauricio Pochettino less than a year after being sacked by Paris Saint-Germain has joined Chelsea. The move may upset a lot of Tottenham Hotspur fans but it is the best possible one for both Pochettino and Chelsea. Chelsea have this incredibly talented yet underdeveloped squad and Mauricio Pochettino will be looking to develop a team with it.

There will be a lot of business happening in the summer as the Blues need to sell quite a few players and also sign some players. Despite signing so many players in January and in the last summer, Chelsea still need a proper striker to lead their attack. Apart from that pretty much every position has options and some even have surplus options.

3 things Mauricio Pochettino has to do at Chelsea:

1. Trim the squad down:

Chelsea currently have 32 players in the first team which is way too much. Mauricio Pochettino will have to quickly identify who is surplus to needs to form a good core group of players. It is going to be a very difficult task but it needs to be done. No incomings make any sense if Chelsea don’t sell any players right now. Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Eduard Mendy, Ruben Loftus Cheek and Cesar Azpilicueta are a few obvious options. Mason Mount has reportedly rejected renewal offers as he wants to leave the club so that will be another departure.

2. Get a proper system in place

The problem under Graham Potter and even Frank Lampard was that there was too much experimentation going on. That is natural when there are so many different players available. Now Mauricio Pochettino will have to be firm in implementing a system which he thinks is the best even if they don’t find instant success. As soon as the experimentation starts then it all becomes a bit too confusing for both the players and the manager. Developing players individually has always been Pochettino’s forte so that he will be expected to do.

3. Get instant success

Chelsea have/will spent a lot of money and that demands instant success. It wouldn’t be wrong to predict that Mauricio Pochettino will be expected to deliver the goods in the very first season. If not a trophy then at least a top 4 finish and a cup final or semi final. Chelsea have no European football so there will be no issues of fixture congestion. If Chelsea lose a lot of games on the trot then the pressure will start mounting on Pochettino which is bad news.
