MARCELINO RETURNS TO LALIGA WITH FORMER SIDE VILLARREAL CF

The Asturias-born manager returns to the club he coached between 2012-2016 after spells at Valencia CF, Athletic Club and French side Olympique Marseille.

(Football news) Marcelino García Toral is back in the LALIGA EA SPORTS dugouts with former side Villarreal CF. The 58-year-old returns to the Estadio de la Cerámica where he enjoyed a highly successful spell a decade or so ago, coaching the Yellow Submarine to promotion from LALIGA HYPERMOTION to the topflight in 2013, into Europe the following year and then into the Champions League in 2016.

“I never thought that this could happen, but life sometimes takes funny turns and can lead us back to places where we’ve been very happy,” he said during his emotion-filled presentation. “Villarreal CF marked a real change in my professional career. I’m so happy to be back here at this magnificent club.”

He returns to a competition that he knows inside out; Marcelino has coached a host of Spanish clubs throughout his career, including Real Sporting, Recreativo de Huelva (where he won the LALIGA HYPERMOTION title in the 2005/06 season), R. Racing Club, Real Zaragoza, Sevilla FC, Villarreal CF, Valencia CF, and Athletic Club.

Marcelino comes into a tough situation and will be the third coach to manage Villarreal CF this season. A poor start led to the sacking of Quique Setién, and his replacement Pacheta struggled across twelve LALIGA, Cup and Europa League matches, which ultimately led to his departure. Villarreal CF sit just five points off the relegation zone and the club have now turned to a familiar face – one who knows the club like the back of his hand – to help them get their season back on track.
