Manchester United welcome Brentford to last home match of the season

(Football news) Manchester United will welcome Brentford in their last game at Old Trafford in what has been an extremely disappointing Premier League season. Rangnick’s team are currently sixth, eight points behind fourth place Arsenal who have played a game less and are unlikely to qualify for the Champions League next season.

The Red Devils avoided a third straight Premier League defeat by securing a 1-1 draw against Chelsea last Thursday and in-form Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored 23 goals in all competitions along with David de Gea have been the only two standout performers for the team. As things stand, they are currently fighting for a Europa League spot but with seventh place West Ham just three points behind with a game in hand and eighth place Wolves being six points behind with two games in hand, there is a possibility of missing out on that competition as well.

The club can finish with a maximum of 64 points, which is their lowest ever Premier League total and will face Brighton and Crystal Palace in their final two games. As for Brentford, the club are currently 12th on the table with 40 points, having won 11, drawn seven and lost 16 of their 34 league matches. Thomas Frank’s team are in-form, securing 10 points in their last four matches, winning against Chelsea, West Ham and Watford while drawing against Tottenham Hotspur.

In team news, Manchester United will be without Edinson Cavani, Luke Shaw, Paul Pogba, Jadon Sancho and Harry Maguire while Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Fred and Jesse Lingard could be available for selection. Rangnick could feature the same starting XI that played against Chelsea with Alejandro Garnacho featuring from the bench. Juan Mata may be selected in place of out-of-form Marcus Rashford while Cristiano Ronaldo will be the first name on the team sheet.

As for Brentford, Christian Norgaard and Kristoffer Ajer are available for selection while Ethan Pinnock, Sergi Canos, Frank Onyeka and Saman Ghoddos are out and Mathias Jorgensen is ruled out for the rest of the season with a groin issue. In-form Christian Eriksen is expected to feature in midfield while Ivan Toney will join Bryan Mbeumo in attack. Despite their recent form, Manchester United have enough quality in them to secure the three points in the fixture and finish their last game at Old Trafford with a win.
