(Football news) The Magpies ruined Manchester City’s quadruple ambitions with a thrilling one-goal victory, while Erik ten Hag’s team easily advanced to the round of sixteen with three goals past Crystal Palace without a response.

Man United’s dominance has substantially diminished since they left Eddie Howe’s team heartbroken at Wembley as they celebrated the end of their six-year trophy drought, and the current EFL Cup champions were nothing short of appalling in Sunday’s Manchester derby.

After a few moments of promise in the first five minutes, an Erling Haaland brace brought Ten Hag’s bland troops crashing back down to earth, and the Norwegian then turned provider for Phil Foden to tap home. At full time, the Theatre of Dreams was transformed into an auditorium of nightmares, eliciting a cacophony of jeers.

Pep Guardiola’s three-time champions Liverpool ended Man United’s winning streak of three games on Sunday, but to be honest, the Red Devils’ victories over Brentford, Copenhagen, and Sheffield United still left a much to be desired. Their 3-0 victory over Palace in the third round was a rare instance of enjoyment.

Man United has advanced from each of their previous five fourth-round EFL Cup matches going into this massive matchup on Wednesday. The Red Devils, who are vying for their seventh tournament victory, haven’t been eliminated at this stage of the competition since a 2015 penalty-shootout loss to Middlesbrough.

But after watching their team’s darling lose for the seventh time already this season—and for the first time since the 1986–1987 season, for a fifth time in their first ten Premier League games—some Man United supporters may already be preparing to end their EFL Cup defense against a team that accomplished what they were unable to.
