What all has been going on in LaLiga the previous week? Here are some of the top stories, from Joaquín’s record-smashing farewell to be the first confirmed transfer of this summer.

(Football News)The 2022/23 LaLiga Santander season may be over, but the news headlines keep coming in Spanish football. Here’s all you need to know. 

Joaquín leaves Real Betis with another glory:

After equalising the all-time LaLiga Santander appearances record in the final competitive game of his career, Joaquín helped set another record this past week. Real Betis held a commendation match to celebrate the career of the club legend and the appearance of 59,621 was the largest ever registered at the Estadio Benito Villamarín, with so many fans rooting up to bid farewell to their hero.

José Luis Mendilibar is staying on as Sevilla Football Club coach:

It has been confirmed that José Luis Mendilibar will be continuing with Sevilla FC, the club he led to Europa League prestige this previous season. After taking over in March, the Basque tactician completely spun the Andalusian team’s form around and has earned a one-year contract extension, meaning he is now set to be in the club until the summer of 2024.

RC Celta Football Club and Carvalhal go their separate ways: 

Portuguese coach Carlos Carvalhal was successful in helping RC Celta football club avoid relegation from LaLiga Santander. The final matchday victory over FC Barcelona proved to be his finishing game in charge of the club, given that the coach and RC Celta club both released statements this past week confirming that he won’t be staying in the club now. 

Nacho will be the new captain of Real Madrid Club Football:

After the departure of Karim Benzema from Real Madrid, there was a question mark over who would hold the position in the club as the new captain of the capital city. Nacho, who already was the vice-captain last season, was on a contract that was set to expire this coming summer, but the centre-back has announced that he is going to stay at the Bernabéu for another season, meaning he’ll become the primary captain of the team.

Real Madrid are bringing in new players to their club: 

After declaring the departures of a handful of players, Real Madrid have already started bringing in reinforcements. This previous week it was stated that left-back Fran García will be joining Real Madrid after the end of the contract from Rayo Vallecano, returning to the club whose academy he came through. Simultaneously winger Brahim Díaz is coming back to the Spanish club following his loan spell at AC Milan.

Real Sociedad strengthen themselves with a right-back in the team:

Another club already started a summer 2023 transfer is Real Sociedad. The Basque side confirmed the acquisition of Hamari Traoré this previous week, signing the 31-year-old right-back from French side Rennes.

Alejandro Catena is moving to Club Atlético Osasuna:

CA Osasuna have announced their first transfer of the summer, with the Pamplona-based side bringing Alejandro Catena in the club from Rayo Vallecano. The 28-year-old centre-back was one of the key players at the Madrid-based club over the past couple of seasons and will now carry on his career at El Sadar with a side gunning for European football.

Loans become permanent at Valencia CF and Sevilla FC:

Both Valencia CF and Sevilla FC rolled a loan deal for a centre-back into a permanent transfer the previous week. At Mestalla, Los Che was so dazzled with Cenk Özkacar that they set in motion an option to make his loan from Lyon permanent, with the Turkish defender signing a deal until 2028. Meanwhile, Sevilla FC activated a similar option to make Loïc Badé’s loan from Rennes a full-time move until 2027.

Either Levante UD or Deportivo Alavés will be promoted: 

The LaLiga SmartBank promotion playoff semi-finals were concluded this past week, with Levante UD conquering over Albacete Balompié 6-1 on an aggregate and Deportivo Alavés overcoming Basque neighbors SD Eibar 3-1 on aggregate. These two teams are now contesting the final, the first leg of which finished 0-0. Therefore, the final promotion spot will be decided on this Saturday June 17th at the Estadi Ciutat de València stadium.  

The beginning of the new LALIGA strategic positioning and international branding:

The previous week we saw LALIGA unveil a new strategic positioning and international branding, along with the slogan “The Power of our Fútbol.” As part of this, LaLiga now becomes LALIGA, written as a single word in capital letters meanwhile, the new brand logo is represented by the initials “LL.” There is also a new corporate colour of coral (Pantone Red 032C), which speaks for the pride, passion, vigour, and excitement of football.
