Koeman: Yamal Can Reach Messi’s Level

At a press conference at the KNVB training center in Zeist, around 70 kilometers from Rotterdam, Dutch national team manager Ronald Koeman offered his thoughts.  His comments were made prior to this Thursday’s pivotal match between Holland and Spain, which is set to begin at 20:45 at the storied De Kuip stadium.

Koeman was quick to acknowledge the strength of the Spanish club, highlighting their strong ball possession and the exceptional skill within their ranks.  He praised the Euro champs, saying, “They have great players in between the lines, and with Nico and Lamine on the flanks, they possess remarkable pace.”  The former Barcelona manager also acknowledged that his team might experience pressure from the Spanish opponents at certain points throughout the game.  “At times, you might have to park the bus, albeit you don’t really want to.  We will want to play high up the pitch and exert pressure.  To retake possession and hold the ball in their half, we must play with intensity,” he said.

Even though they aren’t in this team, Koeman also considered how proud he is to have given players like Pedri, Mingueza, Gavi, and Balde their international debuts.  Naturally, I’m happy to have awarded these players their first caps, but they deserve the recognition.  They have shown themselves to be extraordinary talents ever once they were given the chance.  I’m happy to have introduced these players because I have a particular place in my heart for them, and it will make tomorrow’s game exciting,” he said.

Koeman then turned to Lamine Yamal and shared his aspirations for the future of the young player.  “Having players like Yamal is a boon to a coach because they have the power to alter game results.  The experience of working with Messi was incredible.  Given Yamal’s enormous influence at the club, I hope he can eventually match Messi.  “I hope Frenkie wins a lot of titles with them at Barcelona,” he said.
