(Football news) This summer, the Croatian defender was one of the most sought-after players in Europe, and Guardiola’s team appears to have prevailed in the competition to sign the 21-year-old.

Gvardiol will fill many needs for the Premier League champions as Guardiola looks to upgrade his defensive options. He recently completed a successful season with RB Leipzig and an impressive World Cup campaign with Croatia. Gvardiol appears to be an ideal candidate as Aymeric Laporte’s departure is still being discussed.

“Understand Gvardiol has completed the first part of medical tests today — deal on the verge of being signed. Gvardiol agreed personal terms one month ago with City.”

After Mateo Kovacic, the Croatian defender will be Man City’s second summer acquisition. Man City already had one of Europe’s top defensive records, and the signing of Gvardiol will further make them stronger in this area.

The Croatian international’s transfer to Leipzig was reportedly valued at at least €100 million (£85.3 million), plus bonuses. Following the conclusion of their deal, Guardiola will be keen to begin working with the 21-year-old in preparation for the upcoming campaign.

While many Arsenal supporters will be thrilled at the possibility of Gvardiol arriving this summer, legendary player Alan Smith has some concerns about the transfer.

“That would be the last area I’d be looking at, but perhaps one or two of their centre halves might leave the club this summer,” Smith

“When you think about their defenders, Stones, Nathan Ake, Akanji, they were brilliant last season. I thought that Akanji had a phenomenal debut campaign. Dias, when he played towards the end of the season, was magnificent.

“I think the signing of Gvardiol would be a bit of a surprise. It would be just like Guardiola to sign him and then play him in midfield and surprise everyone!”
