(Cricket News) Shamar Joseph was forced to retire hurt on Day 3 after being struck by a potent yorker from Mitchell Starc. Initially appearing unlikely to continue in the Gabba Test against Australia, the 24-year-old, who has emerged as a notable talent for West Indies in this series, turned the tables by securing a seven-wicket haul. This outstanding performance helped West Indies defeat Australia by eight runs, leveling the series at 1-1. Steve Smith remained unbeaten on 91.
This victory marks West Indies’ first-ever win on Australian soil in 27 years. The team hadn’t secured a Test win in Australia since their 10-wicket success on a challenging WACA Ground pitch in Perth back in February 1997 – a time when neither Shamar nor Green were even born.
West Indies cricket shared an injury update on Shamar Joseph, revealing, “Good news, as scans show no fracture in Shamar Joseph’s toe. He will continue to be monitored by the medical team and assessed tomorrow. WI wish him a speedy recovery!”
On Sunday, Shamar entered the attack when Australia was comfortably placed at 93 for 2 in 28 overs, with Steve Smith (XX) and Cameron Green (42) looking settled. Shamar’s second over proved pivotal as he dismissed Green and then delivered a thunderous yorker to remove Travis Head, who endured a pair in this match. Joseph continued his impact by dismissing Mitchell Marsh, followed by a crucial wicket of Alex Carey. Despite a dropped catch, Joseph claimed Mitchell Starc’s wicket shortly after, securing his second five-wicket haul in consecutive Tests. Captain Pat Cummins fell to Joseph after eight balls.
After the Dinner Break, Alzzari Joseph dismissed Nathan Lyon, reducing Australia to 191 for 9. Shamar Joseph completed the job by cleaning up Josh Hazlewood, sealing West Indies’ historic win. In their first innings, West Indies were bowled out for 311, and Australia declared at 289 for 9 in response. West Indies, in their second innings, managed 193 runs, setting a target of 216 for the home side to chase on Day 4. Shamar Joseph made a sensational Test debut, claiming Steven Smith with his first ball in Adelaide and finishing with 5 for 94. He also impressed with the bat at No. 11, scoring 36 in his first innings.
