JOSE MARIA GIMÉNEZ EXTENDS ATLETI CONTRACT UNTIL 2028: “I CAN’T DESCRIBE HOW HAPPY ME AND MY FAMILY ARE… THE BROTHERHOOD BETWEEN FANS, PLAYERS AND CLUB IS ENGRAVED IN MY HEART”

The Uruguayan international and two-time LALIGA EA SPORTS champion has committed his long-term future to the club.

(Football news) José María Giménez first joined Atlético de Madrid in 2013, at the age of just 18. 290 matches in the famous red and white shirt later, he has become not only one of the team captains on the field, but also one of the club’s most loved players among the fans and coach Diego Simeone.

Jose Maria was crowned LALIGA EA SPORTS champion in 2014, his first season, but his trophy cabinet extends even further, picking up another league title in 2020/21. With Atleti he also won the 2014 Spanish Super Cup, the 2018 UEFA Europa League and the 2018 UEFA Super Cup. He is also one of the most important Uruguayan players of the past decade, winning 61 caps to date and having played in three World Cups.

His grit and intensity make him a hugely important player for Cholo Simeone, but injuries have stopped him putting together consistent runs in the first team in recent seasons. Still only 28, though, Jose Maria has many years ahead of him and Atleti have clearly identified him not only as a key player now but also for the future, committing him to a new deal until 2028.
