Jesse Marsch gets sacked by Leeds

(Football news) The only American manager in the Premier League Jesse Marsch has been sacked as Leeds United manager after a run of very poor results. The club announced on Monday after they suffered a humiliating defeat on Sunday to fellow relegation rivals Nottingham Forest that left them hovering just about the bottom three in the Premier League. On Sunday, Leeds supporters vented out their frustration towards Marsch after the match and chanted that Marsch should leave immediately. The Yorkshire club have subsequently won only four Premier league matches this season and are level on points with 18th-placed Everton with a game in hand.

Marsch only became the third American to coach a Premier League team when Leeds appointed him in February 2022. He replaced Marcelo Bielsa after the club endured a string of tough results that saw them slide closer to relegation. Marsch last season helped the club avoid relegation on the final day of the 2022-23 campaign with a last minute win at Brentford. This season although Leeds have secured impressive wins over Chelsea and Liverpool this season they have failed to find consistency and face yet another battle to stay in the league.

Chris Armas is now set to be the interim manager for the time being and is in line for an awkward return to Manchester United. Leeds now face the daunting task of facing the Red Devils in back-to-back Premier League fixtures this week. Armas was omitted from a club statement which confirmed Marsch’s departure and the departure of the entire staff barring former assistant manager of United as he will be in the Old Trafford dugout on Wednesday.

He was ex-team-mate and good friend Marsch only two weeks after welcoming Armas into his backroom staff they have appointed him as the interim manager for the time being. Leeds’ hierarchy are drawing up a list of candidates to replace Marsch as Armas is going to be assisted by under-21s boss and former England Futsal manager Michael Skubala at Old Trafford for the upcoming clashes. Armas is set to return to Old Trafford where he was famously called “Ted Lasso”

A club statement read on Monday: “Leeds United can confirm head coach Jesse Marsch has been relieved of his duties. Jesse joined the club in February 2022 and was instrumental in keeping the club in the Premier League on the final day of last season. Rene Maric, Cameron Toshack and Pierre Barrieu will also leave the club.

“We would like to thank Jesse and his backroom staff for their efforts and wish them well for the future. The process of appointing a new head coach is underway and we will continue to keep supporters up to date throughout the coming days.”
