Jannick Sinner set to play Lorenzo Sonego in US Open

On Thursday, Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego, both Italians, will compete in the second round of the 2023 US Open
Sinner

(Tennis news) In his opening match, Sinner faced Yannick Hanfmann, ranked No. 54 in the world. Thanks to an early break, the opening set ended with a 3-0 victory for the former. At 5-2 and with his opponent serving, the Italian also had four set points but was unable to convert any of them.

On his own serve, Sinner nevertheless won the next game to finish the set. He won 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 by easily navigating the following two games, dropping just one game in each.

On the other hand, Sonego’s opening round opponent was qualifier Nicolas Moreno De Alboran. In order to win the first set, the Italian jumped out to a 4-1 lead and never looked back.

Two times in the second set, Sonego had a break advantage, but Moreno De Alboran came back to tie the match. For the third time, the Italian managed to get a break and this time didn’t blow it to lose the set.

In the third set, Sonego went ahead 4-0 by twice breaking Moreno De Alboran’s serve. The 28-year-old soon won the match 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 since this deficit was too great for his opponent to overcome.

Head-to-Head

In the head-to-head matchup, Sinner is up 2-0 on Sonego. At the 2023 Halle Open, he defeated them once in three sets.

Predictions

Hanfmann was defeated by Sinner after a fairly dominant performance. He didn’t miss a single serve, and he easily overcame the four break points he encountered. The 22-year-old made 22 unforced errors compared to 30 successful swings.

Moreno De Alboran, who was competing in his first Major main-draw match, gave Sonego a little bit of a challenge. The Italian was able to outperform his rival during crucial moments, demonstrating the gap in their levels of expertise.

Sonego has already twice lost against his younger countryman Sinner. The former did succeed in making their prior clash a little more competitive, but this time around, things might be different.

Before moving to New York, Sinner won the Canadian Open, while Sonego only achieved one victory over the course of two events prior to the US Open. The older Italian hasn’t done well either in the past here.

It was only Sonego’s third victory in the US Open when he defeated Moreno De Alboran. Additionally, he has never advanced past the second round here. Given this, Sinner has a good chance of continuing his winning streak against his countryman.
