Jamshedpur FC wins the League Shield after win over ATK Mohun Bagan

(Football news) Jamshedpur FC won the League Shield for the first time in their history after defeating ATK Mohun Bagan 1-0 at the PJN Stadium in Fatorda on Monday. A goal from Ritwik Das in the 56th minute also helped Jamshedpur FC progress on top of the table and The Red Miners finished with 43 points from 20 games, winning 13 games while the Mariners have 37 points from 20 games.

The Mariners needed a 2-0 win to overtake Jamshedpur and Hyderabad FC but a goal by Ritwik Das dashed their hopes while Greg Stewart set up the goal. The Mariners enjoyed more of the ball in the initial exchanges and came close to breaking the deadlock when an attempt by Tiri went wide off target. Such was the nature of the match, especially in the first half that the referee was forced to reach for his pocket and show three yellow cards.

As expected, Greg Stewart showed his quality with incisive passing and mazy runs. Four minutes before the hour mark, the Scotsman evaded two ATKMB players and cut to his right, beating his marker. Stewart went for goal himself but the attempt came off an ATK Mohun Bagan player and Ritwik Das was present to capitalise on the opportunity and scored past Amrinder Singh.

Despite the Mariners attempts to get back into the game, Jamshedpur FC prevailed, securing three points and becoming the first team in ISL history to win seven games in a row. Under Owen Coyle, Jamshedpur FC seem to have found their swagger and have improved from their sixth place finish last year. Players such as Greg Stewart and Daniel Chima Chukwu have been instrumental in The Red Miners’ success this season and they will hope to make it to the finals in the upcoming days.

Jamshedpur FC will take on Kerala Blasters on March 11th in the first leg of the semi finals while ATK Mohun Bagan will face Hyderabad FC on the next day.
