Jake Dennis wins first Formula E race while Mahindra get a podium in Mexico

(Motorsports news) Avalanche Andretti Formula E team new driver Jake Dennis produced a dominant drive to win the 2023 Mexico City E-Prix. This was the first race for the world’s fastest, lightest, most powerful and efficient electric race car in the GEN3 cars. Dennis started from second on the grid as he won the race ahead of Porsche Formula E Team driver Pascal Wehrlein who started from sixth to finish second and Mahindra Racing’s new driver Lucas di Grassi who was in pole position finished third. 

The 40,000 passionate fans who witnessed the historic debut of the GEN3 cars which is pushing the boundaries of EV technology. The Andretti driver made his race-winning move on Lap 12, with the Brit taking advantage of an opening by di Grassi. From there on Dennis did not look back as he stretched his lead even after three Safety Car periods. He eventually beat Wehrlein by a huge seven seconds as last year’s winner in Mexico, Wehrlein, pushed to an eventual 11-second margin on third-placed di Grassi, 

Wehrlein clambered up from sixth on the grid, with the German Porsche finishing up with four of its powertrains in the top ten. Mahindra racing’s newest driver Lucas De Grassi started on pole as he found himself defending from Jake Dennis. Lucas De Grassi entered the final third of the race as the Brazilian did well to cover Jake Hughes. Eventually, the rookie would be preoccupied with Lotterer who moved to the Porsche-powered Andretti team in the off-season, and easily went past Hughes’ McLaren on the inside at the hairpin on the final lap. 

However finishing fifth was no disappointment for Hughes who was on debut as the rookie is one to look out for in the future  Season 6 champion António Félix da Costa added to Porsche’s tally of points with seventh spot on the day, fighting his way up through the back markers. Mitch Evans claimed points as he finished eighth for Jaguar TCS Racing while Nick Cassidy made it two Envision Racing cars in the points with ninth. It was a disappointing outing for the reigning champion Stoffel Vandoorne who could only steer his DS PENSKE to a single point from 14th on the grid.
