In the 2023 Wimbledon Championships final, the sixth-seeded Ons Jabeur faces the unseeded Marketa Vondrousova

(Tennis news) The current Australian Open winner Aryna Sabalenka was the final opponent for world No. 6 Jabeur, who had her toughest match of the past two weeks. Jabeur had a 4-2 advantage on Centre Court in the tense opening set that took its time to finish, but Sabalenka scored the next five points to take the match.

The World No. 2 was riding her momentum as she led 4-2 in the second set and twice came within one point of a 5-3 advantage before she lost serve for the first time that day. Jabeur seized the chance, winning four straight games to force a final.

Ons Jabeur needed a break in the sixth game of the third set in order to convert her fifth match point and go to her second consecutive Wimbledon final. Currently, she is 17-5 at the grasscourt Major and has a 22-9 win-loss record for the year.

In the meantime, Vondrousova, who is ranked 42nd, defeated Elina Svitolina in a matchup of the last four all-unseeded players to advance to her second Grand Slam singles final and first since the 2019 Roland Garros.

The Czech left-hander got things going quickly, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before taking the first game for the loss of three. Vondrousova seemed poised to win easily despite blowing a 4-0, 40-0 lead on service in the second set until Svitolina recovered both breaks and suggested an unexpected comeback.

That wasn’t to be, though, as the 24-year-old won the following four games to advance to the Wimbledon final as the lowest-ranked competitor since Serena Williams in 2018. She is currently 7-4 at SW19 and 28-10 in 2023.

Head-to-Head

While the two players split their six prior encounters, Vondrousova prevailed in both of their meetings in 2023, including the most recent one in the third round of Indian Wells.

Predictions

Jabeur and Vondrousova both fit the stereotype of baseliners and play comparable games. Both players are skilled at playing angles, especially Vondrousova, who is left-handed. They can also move well and hit the ball hard and hard off either flank.

The Czech has Jabeur’s phone number right now, and her serves might give Jabeur a lot of trouble. Expect Vondrousova to defeat the Tunisian in 2023 and win her first Grand Slam match to maintain her winning streak over the player.
