(Football news) Real Madrid have achieved immense success in the last 9 years. Even though there have been a couple of bad seasons, overall it has been very successful. One thing that has been constant throughout is the midfield. The midfield trio of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Casemiro have been consistently good for Los Blancos. This season there has been a change after Casemiro was sold to Manchester United. Something very unusual happened in Real Madrid’s match against Athletic Club on Sunday.

Carlo Ancelotti started with a midfield of Eduardo Camavinga, Dani Ceballos and Fede Valverde while Toni Kroos and Luka Modric were both left on the bench. It wasn’t a case of fatigue as Modric was rested for the Copa Del Rey match against Villarreal midweek while Kroos was taken off in that game after 56 minutes. Both the veterans did come on eventually and Kroos even managed to score an incredible goal. This may be an indication from Carlo Ancelotti that he is slowly starting the transition because Athletic Club away isn’t usually a fixture where one can afford to rest players.

This could just be a one match thing where Ancelotti brings the duo back in the next match which is a Copa Del Rey Quarter finals against Atletico Madrid. Both Kroos and Modric are out of contract in the summer and there are no concrete reports of their renewals. It has always been said that Modric will be willing to renew while Kroos could consider retirement. A smooth transition is always better than the two leaving abruptly. As of this moment both Camavinga and Ceballos are in good form, so leaving them out would be a tough call for Ancelotti to make.
