(Football news) Inter is poised to win the Scudetto after easily defeating Atalanta BC to record their 11th straight victory; their opponents, meanwhile, are aiming for a top-half finish.
Inter’s third consecutive 4-0 Serie A victory, which preserved their spotless record in 2024, was undoubtedly their most stunning. On Wednesday, they easily defeated Atalanta, with captain Lautaro Martinez scoring just before halftime to increase his lead in the Capocannoniere race.
With an amazing goal total of 67 goals, which put them four goals ahead of both Liverpool and Bayern Munich, Simone Inzaghi’s team had scored more goals this season than any other team in any of the top five leagues in Europe going into the weekend.
Having one toe in the Champions League quarter-finals – although a tough second leg against last-16 opponents Atletico Madrid awaits – and with the Supercoppa Italiana secured already, Inter are aiming to claim three trophies by June, and the Italian title is now theirs to lose.
Should they win on Monday, the Nerazzurri will have 72 points from 27 Serie A matches – as many as they managed through the whole 2022-23 campaign – and both of their main rivals, Juventus and AC Milan, have been left trailing in their wake.
In fact, the last time Inter dropped points was back in late December, when they drew 1-1 with Genoa at Marassi. Nevertheless, the Milan giants have won their last nine league games against the Ligurians at San Siro – and recent form suggests they can extend that streak.
Genoa’s last league victory over Inter dates back to February 2018, and they have lost seven of their nine top-flight encounters with Monday’s hosts while scoring just one goal.
Nevertheless, the Grifone will travel to the second city of Italy having escaped defeat in 10 of the 11 Serie A games played since the middle of December, during which time only Inter has yet to lose.
Following last week’s 2-0 home victory over relegation-threatened Udinese, the Serie B runners-up from last year continued their remarkable comeback season, moving within three points of a top-half place. Their last matchup was a 1-1 draw with Napoli at Stadio Maradona.
