Real Madrid put in a sluggish performance as Barcelona now have the opportunity to go 14 points clear
Real Madrid

(Football news) Real Madrid have out in some really good perfomances since the last international break but the outing against Girona was not one of them. Los Blancos were without Karim Benzema, Ferland Mendy, David Alaba, Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard due to injuries while Dani Ceballos was suspended. Eduardo Camavinga and Rodrygo hadn’t trained much leading into the game. It was always going to be difficult for Real Madrid but the performance was really lethargic and lackluster. Girona really turned up as they are now closer to securing a European spot. Real Madrid have a lot of questions to answer before the Copa Del Rey final and the UCL tie against Manchester City.

Valentin Castellanos’ scored 2 goals inside 24 minutes thanks to some dreadful defending by Real Madrid. The away side were struggling to play out from the back as Girona were pressing very high and defensively as well they were pretty solid. Real Madrid did pull a goal back as Marco Asensio set up Vinicius Jr. However Castellanos scored another 2 goals in the 2nd half to kill the game. Vinicius Jr assisted Lucas Vazquez for a consolation goal as the game ended 4-2. The home side put in a complete performance but Real Madrid’s defence made it way to easy for them. Carlo Ancelotti who usually defends his players in public was also critical of the performance especially in defence.

The only bright apot was perhaps Vinicius Jr who got a goal and an assist despite being on the receiving end of some nasty fouls and a lot of boos from the Girona fans. Real Madrid need to bounce back quickly in order to get some momentum before the key Copa Del Rey final against Osasuna followed by the UEFA Champions League semi final against Manchester City. The defence needs to sort itself out and this could force Carlo Ancelotti to bring back Aurélien Tchouaméni into the starting line-up especially against Manchester City.
