Indian boxer Sachin Siwach bags gold at 2021 AIBA Youth Men’s and Women’s World Boxing Championships

Indian Boxer Sachin Siwach defeated Kazakhstan’s Yerbolat Sabyr 4-1 to clinch a gold in the 2021 AIBA Youth Men's and Women's World Boxing Championships in Kielce, Poland on Friday.

Sachin's win took India's gold medal tally to 8 following 7 golds clinched by Indian women boxers. In the 56 kg final, the Haryanvi pugilist notched up a top performance to triumph Sabyr 4-1 in a contest, by the end of which the Kazagh boxer was left with a bloodied face.

Sabyr had thrashed the top favorites one after another including Russia's Aleksey Shendrik, who clinched the title of the 2020 EUBC European Youth Boxing Championships. The 19 year old had a solid strategy to keep things in control in the first round against India’s solo male finalist.

In the contest of southpaw pugilists, the Kazakh was a tough opponent for Sachin and his counter-punches were brilliant in the second round when he controlled the fight from longer range. Sabyr had the technical upper hand. However, Sachin’s fighting spirit midway in round two turned the tides in his favour as the Indian pugilist scripted the biggest surprise of the day.

India finished their campaign with 11 medals consisting of 8 golds & 3 bronze medals and clinched the top position in the overall leaderboard. They moved a step forward from their previous best of 10 medals that included 2 golds, 2 silvers and 6 bronze which came in 2018.
