(Motorsports news) India won the most medals in a single Asian Games edition, as its athletes continued to flourish at the continental sports event in Hangzhou, China. India eclipsed its previous record of 70 medals at the 19th Asian Games on Wednesday (Oct 4), moving closer to the 100-medal target established before the event began. The recent achievement, combined with a strong finish, might propel India into the top four in the Asian Games.

India equaled their previous total of 69 medals as race walkers Manju Rani and Ram Baboo won bronze in the 35km race walk mixed team event. Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Pravin Ojas Deotale won gold in the Compound Archery Mixed Team event, bringing India’s total to 71 medals in the Asian Games. This was India’s best result in the Asian Games.

At the time of writing, India had received 16 gold, 27 silver, and 31 bronze medals, for a total of 74 medals. This is India’s joint-highest gold medal count, having matching the 2018 record in Jakarta, while the 27 silver medals are also their greatest in the games. In terms of bronze medals, India still needs six more to beat their total of 36 at the 2014 Incheon Games.

As things currently stand, India intends to surpass the 100-medal target set before the start of the Asian Games. Shooters have been instrumental in India’s success, winning 22 medals, including seven gold, nine silver, and six bronze. India has won 23 medals in athletics, where they have written history on numerous fronts. India’s Boxing and Rowing teams are second with five medals each, while Sailing and Squash have three medals each.

In addition, India won historic medals in women’s cricket, equestrian, wushu, and other sports. With the men’s cricket team and Neeraj Chopra in the Javelin Throw still to perform, India might be on the rise in overall medals. With four days till the games’ closing ceremony on Sunday (October 8), India still needs 26 medals to reach the 100-medal milestone.
