Hugo Lloris signs a new contract extension with Tottenham Hotspur

(Football news) Tottenham captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract with the club which will run until 2024. Lloris is the captain of both club and country and he has won the World Cup and UEFA Nations League with France. Hugo at the age of 35, has racked up 395 appearances for Spurs since arriving from Lyon in 2012. He is already 14th in the all-time appearance list for Tottenham as he will soon become only the 12th player to make 400-plus appearances in all competitions. Only two goalkeepers have achieved this feat, Pat Jennings (590) and Ted Ditchburn (452)

Lloris is subsequently the first goalkeeper to keep 100 clean sheets for Spurs in the Premier League and now is currently up to 112 and only one of 16 goalkeepers to have reached a century of clean sheets in the Premier League. The Frenchman has led the team out in three cup finals, including the Champions League Final in 2019. He played a huge role in the qualification for the Champions League in 2015/16 and a record 2016/17 campaign, where they finished second in the Premier League with a club high 86 points and conceded a club record low of 26 goals in a league season.

He was first capped by France in 2008 and Lloris is now up to 136 appearances for his country, second only to Lilian Thuram (142). He captained Les Bleus for the first time in 2010 and since then he has now worn the armband on a record 108 occasions. He is on his way to legendary status as he has led France in five major tournaments – Euro 2012, the 2014 World Cup, Euro 2016, the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020. In Russia in 2018, Lloris became the first Spurs player to win the World Cup and lift the trophy as captain.

Antonio Conte will be happy that the club captain has signed a contract extension as Lloris is an integral part of this team. He not only brings experience in this team but also mainly he’s a very good leader, Lloris’ decision to sign an extension at Spurs brings any uncertainty surrounding his future to a close. According to rumors Conte was ready to let him leave as a free agent. The 35-year-old was linked with a return to Nice where he had started his professional career with the Ligue 1 outfit but now he will continue playing for Tottenham at least till the age of 36.

Earlier this month Conte said: "He's our captain, he is a top goalkeeper for us, he has great experience. He knows Tottenham very well. He loves this shirt and this badge. For me he is an important player and I'm sure that they are going to find a solution for him to continue to play with Tottenham."
